Abstract

Regular diesel has always been critical in transportation, industry, agriculture, and other fields related to this one. Additionally, because consistent reliance on diesel engines results in air pollution from exhaust gases and compromises environmental cleanliness, it is also not sustainable and non-renewable. Since there are no appropriate and effective alternatives that can be used as an alternative to replace it, it is necessary to search for a substitute fuel to be used in its place, which is biodiesel. In this review paper, the impact of biodiesel on engine performance and emissions is discussed. When using an alternative fuel, it must not affect engine performance. It is necessary to work to reduce emissions that are dangerous to the environment. Biodiesel is the alternative and future fuel recommended by many researchers. A decrease in brake power, a decrease in brake thermal efficiency, and an increase in specific fuel consumption were observed compared to regular diesel. As for the CO, CO2, and HC exhaust emissions, there was a difference among the researchers, so some found a decrease and some found a high. This effect was observed from a decrease or increase in engine parameters through a review several researches. The reason for this effect on engine performance is due to the characteristics of biodiesel fuel, as it has a low heat content, an increase in density and viscosity, and it contains a quantity of oxygen, as well as the accuracy of mixing. Despite these effects on engine performance, biodiesel produced from animal fats or vegetable oils can be used in compression-ignition internal combustion engines without the need for any engine modifications.
